THE QUEST FOR COAL

The price of coal was always high, and no price was higher than that paid by the miners who lost their lives at Lofthouse Colliery. Now in 2001 a nature walk and woodland  stand where the pithead and the railway  sidings once throbbed with life.

This 40 minute video, produced by Outwood Community Video, includes a brief history of Lofthouse Colliery, underground  footage from the Yorkshire coalfield and news reports from the 1973 disaster. It also includes a short visit to The National Coal Mining Museum for England and first hand accounts from miners who worked at the pit. Finally it records the erection of a fitting memorial to the hard work, sense of pride and companionship once shared by a whole community.
